Finally back in Wanaka

Yesterday I caught a lift from Christchurch down to Wanaka with Jon (trainer who came to the World Champs) and his partner Kristie. Jon and I were up in Christchurch for a WOPP (Winter Olympic Performance Program) planning meeting for skeleton over the next year. But finally I have made it back to Wanaka, and next weekend, Easter weekend, I will be working back up at the snowfarm, it should be a big weekend with the race to the sky on. I went for a run this morning around Hawea town ship and managed to get totally lost, Hawea is tiny, but still I couldnt find my way back.

A few weeks of travelling around

Since arriving back in the South Island, I have managed to soak up lots of much needed sun shine, the days have been long and hot, with beautiful blue sky's. I have spent the last week down in Dunedin, where I was the guest speaker for a Forsyth Barr Young Professionals evening, the event was really a networking evening for young professionals, however we raised funds for Dunedins Infection Control unit. I often forget how different my life is to most Kiwi's, it is funny how so many people can not comprehend how or even why I quit my job to fly to Canada and try out a sport I read about in the news paper... I got loads of great feed back after the evening, I enjoyed it and I am really keen to speak at a few more corporate events.

I am now back up in Christchurch, I was hoping to head to Wanaka today, but it looks like I wont get down there until next weekend, I am looking forward to being back in Wanaka, it is such a wonderful place and after nearly 5 months of travelling around I can not wait have a room and a bed that I can call my own (even if only for several months).

Back in Aotearoa

I got back into NZ last tuesday and have spent a few days hanging out with my mum and family in Auckland, I have spent very little time up in Auckland (where I grew up) in the last 8 years (I have spent more days at the track in Calgary during that time), so it was nice to to see every one. On my first day back I was out in the garden moving the lawn in 28 deg, a big change from the sub zero temperatures on tour. I also got to go to my nephews bmx club competition, a real kiwi summer time experience, he finished 3rd. Today I flew to Christchurch where my Father and the rest of my family live, from the airport I went straight to music group with my little sister Eileen (3 years old) and then spent the day playing in the garden with her.
Everything I own is in the garage here at my Dads, so this weekend I get to repack my bags, then head south to Wanaka, where I will be training and working for this coming kiwi winter (my 12th winter in a row). I'll stop off in Morven on the way south, and see Kelly, Kel is working on her parents dairy farm at the moment. After the world champs Kel went to Las Vegas for a few days with Tim, I went skiing with my brother. Kel flew home last Wednesday, and was in the cow shed helping her parents with the milking on her first day back. She is loving it.
It really does feel like I live two completely different lives. I am glad I am back to the Kiwi one.
NZ is so beautiful.
